From Africa to Cuba, Brazil to Japan, every culture uses percussion for ritual, ceremony, and for fun. The World Percussion course will explore a variety of world drum traditions using a collection of drums and percussion instruments and will emphasize ensemble playing. Students will perform complex grooves, arrangements and polyrhythms using sticks, mallets and hand percussion and will learn rhythms and techniques that are fundamental to drumming. Students will leave this course with an understanding and appreciation for Japanese Taiko, West African and Caribbean rhythms and the world of drum traditions.
